Guardians of the Everglades: Routes & Roads Oversight

8 AM – 5 PM
Price: $100  (Lunch included)
Capacity: 48
AICP CM: 7

Engage directly with one of South Florida’s defining planning tensions: advancing mobility and economic growth while protecting one of the world’s most fragile and significant natural environments. This mobile workshop explores the intersection of mobility investment, economic development, and environmental stewardship in South Florida’s rapidly evolving urban edge.

Participants will travel aboard the Metro Express Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to Homestead, examining how high-capacity transit infrastructure is reshaping regional connectivity and influencing growth patterns along the southern corridor of Miami-Dade County. An on-site economic development demonstration in Homestead, where local planners will discuss how transit-oriented investment can stimulate redevelopment, improve access to employment centers, and support housing and commercial opportunities.

We will then pivot to a critical environmental perspective through a presentation by representatives from Friends of the Everglades. The discussion will focus on the mounting development pressures facing the Everglades ecosystem, including suburban expansion, transportation corridors, water management challenges, and land-use conflicts at the urban-wilderness interface.

Through guided discussion and field observation, the workshop will present the competing — and often interconnected — perspectives surrounding infrastructure investment and environmental protection.

The tour highlights Miami history while also showcasing how these two Villages are adapting to modern times. Step into the history of one of South Florida’s most distinctive communities. Founded in the 1920s, Miami Shores Village showcases a rich mix of Mediterranean Revival gems, charming Art Deco and Streamline Moderne homes, and postwar ranch-style residences. With its winding streets, lush landscapes, and timeless architectural character, the Village offers a living museum of South Florida’s evolving design traditions. After many years of being a hidden gem, people are discovering the unique vibe of El Portal.

You will see wild peacocks, enjoy old canopy growth and learn about some of the new developments in the planning stages. El Portal has one of the oldest homes in Miami and the west side was developed with homes that were the first in the nation to have central AC as part of the original design. Both of these communities are highly sought after by both developers and families seeking to relocate to vibrant, family-oriented neighborhoods that offer a strong sense of community, rich architectural character, and proximity to Miami’s urban core.
