Leonard Pitts, Jr.

Leonard Pitts, Jr. knew from the age of five that he was destined to be a writer—and more than four decades later, that calling still defines him. Over a 43-year career, he has worked as a columnist, professor, radio producer, and lecturer, but at his core, he remains devoted to the written word. His widely read newspaper column reaches millions, and his acclaimed books, including The Last Thing You Surrender, have earned critical praise.

 

Pitts’ work has garnered numerous honors, highlighted by the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for commentary, along with awards from major journalism organizations and induction into the National Society of Newspaper Columnists Hall of Fame.

 

A sought-after speaker and educator, he has taught at several universities, including Princeton. His powerful voice resonated nationally after 9/11, cementing his reputation as a deeply impactful commentator. Born in Southern California, he now lives in Maryland with his wife.

Phillip Dunlap

Director of Broward County’s Cultural Division

 

Phillip Dunlap is the Director of Broward County’s Cultural Division, overseeing a $11 million annual budget and leading the County’s local arts agency. Under his direction, the Division’s core mission is to strengthen the community’s cultural environment and the development of the arts through robust grantmaking, innovative marketing, and strategic community engagement.

 

Born in Mason City, Iowa, Phillip manages the county’s investment in the arts through grant making, public art initiatives, and arts education.
