Congratulations, class of 2023! You are one step away from calling graduate school a thing of the past as you step into becoming the planners of tomorrow. APA Florida will always have a piece of you zoned in our hearts.

Speaking of networking, the 2023 Florida Planning Conference will be hosted Sept 5 – 8 in Jacksonville. If you have been working on a capstone project, or innovative research, now is your time to shine! FPC will be hosting a student poster contest, those selected to present will receive a conference registration waiver. More details below.

Don’t know much about APA Florida? Looking for quick reference mentoring, scholarships, and internship opportunities? Curious about what steps to take as you make your way through graduate school?

The Planning Playbook aims to provide planning graduate students access to resources and tips ranging from mentors and career advice to ways to get involved in the planning community. The playbook narrows down the information you need to establish yourself in the planning world. It covers six core topics:

FPC23: Student Poster Competition & Session
Accepted presenters will receive a 50% discount on registration

Students, here’s your chance to strut your stuff at the 2023 Florida Planning Conference. We invite you to submit posters to be displayed at FPC23 in Jacksonville, Sept. 5-8, 2023.

This inaugural Student Poster Competition and Session gives you an opportunity to showcase your work and get feedback from seasoned planning professionals. It is also the ideal networking opportunity.

To entice you even more, students whose posters are selected will receive 50 percent off FPC23 registration, a $75 value!

Here are the Student Poster Competition and Session Rules and Guidelines. All entries must represent original student work. When submitting your poster, you will be required to affirm that you have read the rules and guidelines.

A panel of judges from both academic and professional backgrounds will be assembled. Recognitions for outstanding content will be held during the conference or at the Closing Reception.

All poster submissions are due by July 17.

More Florida Planning Conference News

Registration. The registration changes announced by the chapter office don’t impact students, per se, but please go to the Florida Planning Conference webpage to review new prices. Student hotel rooms ($119 a night for single-quad occupancy) go fast, so if you plan on attending, you may want to register earlier.

(Hint: If you are graduating and are still a student member at the time of the conference, you qualify for the student price!)

Headshots. Ideal for new graduates or students beefing up their LinkedIn profile, you can book a FREE headshot session during FPC. It’s complimentary for all registrants. Information will be available in the conference program.

Outstanding Student Project Award

Outstanding Student Project Award to recognize outstanding class projects or papers by a student or group of students in accredited planning programs in Florida that contribute to advances in the field of planning. While it is appropriate to submit a project or paper on which a faculty member(s) has given guidance, the submission should be primarily the work of the students.

All projects with students as the primary authors of the work or with students receiving class credit for the work will be moved to this category. In other categories, student involvement and work products should be secondary.

The Student Award deadline is 5 pm on May 12.

2023 Andre Anderson Minority Scholarship

$2,000 gift available; Winner invited to FPC23

The Andre Anderson Minority Scholarship is meant to celebrate planning and foster increased interest in planning by providing financial support for graduate-level planning students who are members of underserved ethnic groups and who are enrolled in either (1) a PAB-accredited urban planning graduate program in the State of Florida or (2) an urban planning graduate program in the State of Florida that is actively seeking PAB accreditation.

This year, one $2,000 scholarship will be awarded. The recipient will be invited to FPC23.

The deadline to submit a complete application is 5 pm ET on July 17.

Student Paper Competition Grand Prize $3,000

The Planning & Law Division of the American Planning Association announces its 40th Annual Smith-Babcock-Williams Student Writing Competition. The winning entry in the competition will be awarded a prize of $3,000, the second-place paper will receive a prize of $1,000, and one honorable mention prize of $500 will be awarded. All three winning entries will be published in the semi-annual newsletter of the Planning and Law Division. Depending on the format of the winning entry and the interest of the author, the Competition Committee may also work with the winner to place the article in a journal or coordinate and present a Division webinar.

The deadline is at 5 pm ET on June 30, 2023.
